15TH CENTURY. It took place in Galicia between 1467 and 1469.
Its origins were, on the one hand, the social conflict caused by famine, epidemics and abuses by the nobility, and on the other hand, the political weakness caused by the civil war in Castile.
civil war in Castile.
80,000 men swept through the Galician counties and ended up surrendering most of the castles and fortifications. Almost 170 fortifications were demolished and their lords fled Galicia.
After the triumph, the mixture of classes in the Irmandiña Brotherhood (peasants, bourgeoisie, clergy and nobles) made it difficult for them to unite, and King Henry IV's support for the fleeing nobles meant that they gradually recovered their territories over the following years.
Many castles were rebuilt but nothing was ever the same again. The power of the feudal lords was greatly reduced, which favoured the evolution towards absolutist monarchies and a modern state."
