"The pulpit commissioned from Giovanni Pisano replaced a previous one, made by Guglielmo (1157-1162), which was sent to the cathedral of Cagliari, then dependent on the archbishop of Pisa. Giovanni Pisano's pulpit was completed in 1310 and survived the great fire of the cathedral on October 25, 1596. During restoration work, between 1599 and 1601, the pulpit was dismantled and its pieces placed in different places, including the Camposanto and the warehouses of the Opera della Primaziale. It was not reassembled until 1926, when it was rebuilt in a different position than the original and, surely, with the parts in an order and orientation different from that intended by the author, since there was no documentation of how the various elements were organized, including mosaics, before dismantling. It is not even known whether or not it had a marble staircase.

The four "simple" columns were donated by Mussolini, when he was dictator, since after the reconstruction some pieces were missing (such as the staircase). To honor the Duce these columns were placed in plain sight, putting the caryatids at the back, less visible, when, supposedly, it should have been exactly the opposite.

With its articulated architectural structure and complex sculptural decoration, the work is one of the largest narratives in images of the 14th century that reflects the renewal and religious fervor of the time.

On the slightly curved panels, the episodes from the Life of Christ are sculpted with expressive language.
