Originally the Wollesen- Nicewander building, this is now owned and operated by the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. These 4 gargoyle faces appear to be carved from sandstone which was a popular building material in Oklahoma in the early 1900’s. The Garber sandstone which runs primarily through north and central Oklahoma was prevalent in the Osage hills just to the northeast of Perry.
3 of these appear between each arches on the front of the building facade and the 4th is on the far left with what appears to be a normal face to the far right. The rest of the building has other detailed carved stone adding to its ornate look.
Historical data:
“Originally the "Boston Store" built in 1894 and it was one of the first permanent buildings of stone on the square. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it was erected by Adolph Wolleson and A.C. Nicewander, both early day businessmen. Wolleson, a merchant sailor from Denmark is credited with influencing the building design using naval motifs. Gargoyle head and leaf figures accent the Romanesque arched windows. The first floor facade has been altered with stucco panels covering the original recessed entry store front.”
