"El día a día de estos 'guardianes de los muertos', ataviados con una austera túnica marrón, comienza a las seis de la mañana, alternando sus horas de oración y meditación con las labores de limpieza, jardinería y adecentamiento de nichos y sepulturas, aunque su labor más apreciada es el acompañamiento espiritual a las familias durante el entierro de los fallecidos, ofreciendo consuelo y esperanza.
La comunidad de Guadix vive en el interior de una cueva, por decisión de su fundador, ya que, según él, era la mejor manera de cumplir con el voto de pobreza que tiene la congregación, pues la cueva ha sido el hábitat tradicional de los accitanos más humildes.
La rareza y originalidad de esta comunidad religiosa ha llamado tradicionalmente la atención de periodistas, fotógrafos, escritores y directores de cine de todo el mundo, destacando entre ellos los fotógrafos Frank Scherschel y Ramón Massat o la directora de cine Marie Menken."
