Lindbergh took off from Roosevelt Airfield which is now part of a shopping mall. Lindbergh departed with his plane loaded with over 450 gallons of fuel watched by nearly 1000 people he took off down a muddy, dirt runway. Lindberg slowly rolled down the runway lifting off at the last moment, barely clearing the telephone lines at the end of the runway.

Lindbergh's flight would take him North and East over Cape Cod, Nova Scotia, the southern tip of Ireland, just south of Great Britain, across the English Channel and into France. His successful flight lasted 33.5 hours. Several other pilots had attempted the crossing but failed. Six men died in three separate crashes, and another three were injured in a fourth crash.

The push for transatlantic flight came In 1919 when New York hotel owner Raymond Orteig offered a $25,000 prize for the completion of the first nonstop flight between New York and Paris. Early in 1927, Charles Lindbergh obtained the backing of nine St. Louis investors to compete for the prize.

Lindbergh contacted Ryan Airlines in San Diego to build an airplane for the flight. To honor his supporters, he named it the Spirit of St. Louis. When he successfully reached Paris, Lindbergh became a world hero who would remain in the public eye for decades. His flight touched off the “Lindbergh boom” in aviation—aircraft industry stocks rose in value, and interest in flying skyrocketed
