Art Carney, whose entertainment career spanned six decades, got his start performing various comedic roles and impersonations on radio in the 1930s. He moved on to television working opposite Jackie Gleason on the variety show ‘Cavalcade of Stars.’ Gleason and Carney developed a good rapport which carried over into early television’s classic sitcom ‘The Honeymooners.’ Between the original series and its follow-ups, Art Carney was nominated for seven Emmys, winning six of them.
Carney’s television appearances weren’t limited to ‘The Honeymooners.’ He also appeared on an episode of ‘The Twilight Zone’ and a couple of ‘Batman’ episodes as well as westerns and variety shows. He was also a prolific actor in films and on Broadway, even winning an Academy Award for his role in the 1974 feature ‘Harry and Tonto.’ In addition, he made a number of spoken-word and comedy recordings. His last film role was in 1993’s ‘Last Action Hero.’
Art Carney died on November 9, 2003, just a few days after is 85th birthday. He’s buried in Riverside Cemetery in Old Saybrook, CT.
