This transmitter along with a jumble of another three smaller ones, is situated on Core Hill in the centre of Aberdeenshire, some 15 miles north of the city of Aberdeen, and is named for the parish of Meldrum, there rural district which it stands in.
The transmitter was constructed for BBC broadcasting and began service on October 13th 1955 for the 405-line service, covering around a 40 mile radius of nearly all Aberdeenshire in the north-east of Scotland, along with parts of Moray to the north-west and Angus to the south.
The service ceased in January 1985 and became radio only, with BBC national DAB transmissions beginning on February 18th 2004.
The three smaller antenna have since been added on the summit area of the 246 metre high hill, and are visible from a great distance.
