In 1888, railroad superintendent, G.W. Holdrege of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy RR literally put the town of Alliance, NE, on the map when he requested that the town of Grand Lake change its name. He thought that a one-word name closer to the beginning of the alphabet would be better for business. Alliance is still a major railroad hub, and the town has not forgotten its roots: This caboose, along with an early twentieth-century ten-wheeler and its tender form a kind of monument to Alliance’s railroad heritage.
This 30’ steel caboose with an extended-vision cupola was very typical of the type of cabooses seen in the era before cabooses went out of style. It was part of an order of 24 delivered to the Chicago Burlington & Quincy and numbered 13690-13714. After the CB&Q merged with the Northern Pacific and Great Northern railroads in 1970, many of these cabooses were rebuilt and for some reason had steel plates welded over their windows.
Current Use: Park display
 Type Of Caboose: Cupola, "Standard"
