"History
The Indian Chapel is one of the oldest wooden churches in North America.

A first bark chapel was erected in Tadoussac in 1615. Another was built in 1641, the year of the permanent establishment of the first Jesuit in Tadoussac. In 1661, a stone chapel was erected on land ceded by Governor Jean de Lauzon, 18 m long. However, it was destroyed by fire in 1665.

In the summer of 1668, Saint Mgr François de Montmorency-Laval visited Tadoussac, baptized 149 Amerindians prepared by Father Henri Nouvel3, and celebrated mass there in a bark chapel in front of 400 Montagnais, as at the origin of the village in 1615.

In 1747, Father Claude Coquart built the current chapel5, which was completed on June 24, 1750, and the first mass was celebrated on that day. The altar is dated 1790 and is signed M. Émond. The confessional chandelier dates from the end of the 18th century.

The chapel was designated a national historic site on June 26, 2012.

La chapelle des Indiens est l'une des plus anciennes églises en bois en Amérique du Nord.

Une première chapelle d'écorce est érigée à Tadoussac dès 1615. Une autre voit le jour en 1641, l'année de l'établissement permanent du premier jésuite de Tadoussac. En 1661, on érige sur un terrain cédé par le gouverneur Jean de Lauzon une chapelle en pierres, d'une longueur de 18 m. Celle-ci est cependant détruite par un incendie en 1665.

Lors de l'été 1668, saint Mgr François de Montmorency-Laval visite Tadoussac, y baptise 149 Amérindiens préparés par le père Henri Nouvel3, et y célèbre la messe dans une chapelle d'écorce devant 400 Montagnais, comme à l'origine du village en 1615.

En 1747, le père Claude Coquart fait élever la chapelle actuelle5, qui est terminée le 24 juin 1750, et on célèbre alors ce jour-là la première messe. L'autel est daté de 1790 et est signé M. Émond. Le lustre confessionnal date de la fin du XVIIIe siècle.

La chapelle a été désignée lieu historique national le 26 juin 2012.
