Measured 1737, according to a supposed Indian deed of 1686, granting lands extending a day-and-a-half walk. Using picked men to force this measure to its limit, Thomas Penn reversed his father's Indian policy losing Indian friendship.
Twenty years after Wiliam Penn's death, his sons and agents needed more land for the many settlers entering the area. The agent claimed they had a deed dating to the 1680's between William Penn and the Lenape-Delawares. The Indians had promised to sell land "as far as a man could walk in a day and a half." Chief Lappawinsoe, believing the treaty genuine and assuming a man could only walk 40 miles, agreed to the WALK! The Provinical Secretary James Logan planned well and hired 3 men, Edward Marshall, Solomon Jennings and James Yeates to run!
Seventy miles, in a day and a half, netted the Penns 1,200,000 acres and lost them the respect of the Indians."
