Huhkonkallion polttokalmisto - Raisio, Finland - Signs of History on Waymarking.com

[FIN] Joskus muinaisjäännös löytyy aivan liian myöhään. Huhkonkallion erikoiset kallionkoloihin tehdyt hautaukset löytyivät sattumalta, kun moottoritien rakentaminen oli jo täydessa vauhdissa. Karulla, mäntyä kasvavalla kalliolla ei päällepäin näkynyt mitään merkkejä muinaisjäännöksistä.

Kallion räjäytystöiden aikana mäen päältä löytyi kuitenkin miekan katkelma ja keihäänkärki. Löydöt eivät loppuneet tähän, silla tielinjan edetessa löydettiin lisää aseita ja koruja Löytäjinä eivät kuitenkaan olleet arkeologit vaan tien rakentajat. Tästä seurasi ongelma. Onneksi osa alueesta säilyi ehjänä. Selvisi, että kallion päällä oleviin koloihin oli tehty polttohautauksia. Rovion jäännökset, palaneet luut ja esineiden katkelmat oli kätketty näihin koloihin. Ainoat hautarakenteet olivat muutamaan kallionkoloon ladotut kivet.

Huhkonkalliolta Raisionjoelle päin katsottuna maisema näytti ennen erilaiselta. Löydetyt esineet ovat tuhat vuotta vanhoja, jotkut niistä vielä pari sataa vuotta vanhempiakin. Raisionjoki oli silloin paljon nykyistä leveämpi, ja pellot vasta pieniä tilkkuja. Ehkäpä jokilaaksoon avautuvalla kauniilla maisemalla oli merkitystä hautapaikkaa valittaessa.


[EN] Sometimes the relic is found far too late. Huhkonkallio's special burials made in rock holes were found by chance when the construction of the highway was already in full swing. There were no signs of ancient remains visible on the barren, pine-growing rock.

However, during the blasting of the rock, a fragment of a sword and a spearhead were found on top of the hill. The discoveries did not end there, as the road line progressed, more weapons and jewelry were found. However, the discoverers were not archaeologists, but road builders. This resulted in a problem. For a researcher, the object and where it is found are equally important. The object alone doesn't tell much, but you should also know if the object comes from a place of residence or a burial or if it was lost in time.

Fortunately, part of the area remained intact. It turned out that cremations had been made in the holes on top of the rock. Fireplace remains, burnt bones and fragments of objects were hidden in these holes. The only burial structures were stones laid in a few rock holes.

Looking at Raisionjoki river from Huhkonkallio cliffs, the landscape used to look different. The found objects are a thousand years old, some of them even a couple of hundred years older. Raisionjoki river was much wider then than it is today, and the fields were only small patches. Perhaps the beautiful landscape opening up to the river valley was important when choosing the burial site.
