This jail was one of many built and used by the British to enclose political prisoners, people who opposed the European domination and conspire against the British rule.
Cochin Heritage Zone Conservation Society renovated the old jail and opened it to the public as a heritage site. Inauguration took place in August 2022.
It was (and it is) conveniently located to Fort Kochi Police Station, which is actually the next door.
The exact year of its construction is not known but some of the original materials used were dates 1865, so it was definitely in the second half of the 19th century.
Some of the prisoners kept here were Mohammed Rehman, Accamma Cherian, and K J Herschel as well as the communist leaders like A K Gopalan and EMS Namboodiripad.
There were eight 50 square feet cells each with a concrete 6 feet long bed. The doors were made of cast iron.
The place can be visited for free but opening times are a bit random.
