4. The SHIPP MONUMENT, corner S. Mint St. and W. 4th St. at the rear of the post office, memorializes the military reinstatement of the Southern States after the War between the States. The granite shaft is 30 feet high and weighs 15 tons. Lt. William Ewen Shipp, the first southerner graduated from West Point after the conflict, chose service with the 10th Cavalry (Negro), and was killed in the Battle of Santiago, Cuba, July 2, 1898. His body was interred at Lincoln. Subscriptions to defray the cost of the monument were made by school children throughout the State. -North Carolina: A Guid to the Old North State 1939
This memorial was originally located at the front of the Mint on West Trade Street and was repositioned to the southeast corner of the site when the Post Office expanded in 1934(The location called out in the Guide).
