Carl Grey Park in Gering, NE, boasts picnic tables, shade trees, the Gering Senior Center, a small replica of the Statue of Liberty and this Union Pacific 2-8-0 steam locomotive. It was built by Baldwin in 1901, one of an order for 58 such locomotives. Originally numbered #1643, it was renumbered #423 in 1915. Fitted with 57” drive wheels, #423 saw both freight and passenger service.
#423 was one of nine consolidations donated by Union Pacific to different cities in Nebraska. Carl Grey Park is right across the street from the former Union Pacific depot in Gering.
