One in 11 nationwide is quite a place of honor.

That’s where Stuart W. Cramer High School finds itself after American School and University magazine recognized it as a national model in architectural design.

The Cramerton high school was featured as one of 11 examples of outstanding school architecture and design in the country in the magazine’s 2014 Architectural Portfolio. The portfolio is published annually to recognize educational facilities with exceptional designs, planning and construction.

“It is a significant honor for Gaston County Schools to have Stuart W. Cramer High School included in the Architectural Portfolio as a national model for the school design and construction industry,” said superintendent of schools Jeff Booker, in a statement to the media. “Stuart W. Cramer High School is a state-of-the-art campus that will serve Gaston County for many years to come. The school is a great investment in our community’s future.”

Stuart W. Cramer High is a 268,000-square-foot building with the capacity for 1,200 students. The three-story building is made of brick and glass. It is located on the property of the former Lakewood Golf Course.

A panel of judges deemed the 1,500-seat L. Reeves McGlohon Auditorium the soul of the school. Located in the center of the building, it houses a state-of-the-art theater with a large backstage space, a scene shop and dressing rooms.

Judges credited the school for innovative educational programs available to students. The school features four learning academies, each with its own unique educational focus. Program offerings include culinary arts, welding, career and technical education and more.

The building was also selected for its energy-efficient and compact design, which allows for quick travel time to all points. Judges say green space makes up more than half the 90-acre property, which provides students outdoor space to learn. The school also boasts a spacious gymnasium and a 3,000-seat football stadium with an artificial turf field.

Construction began on the school in 2010 at a cost of $63 million. The school system borrowed money for the project through a voter-approved 2007 school bond referendum. It was built to accommodate future populat

ion growth and to alleviate overcrowding at South Point and East Gaston high schools. The project architect was Boomerang DESIGN/MBAJ Architecture P.A., which has offices in Charlotte, Shelby, Raleigh and Lexington.

Stuart W. Cramer High became Gaston’s first new school in nearly a decade when it opened in 2013. Sadler Elementary opened in 2004 and Forestview High opened in 1998.
