1. The KANAWHA COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY (open 10-9 weekdays; 205 Sun.), SE corner L and Hale Sts., is a vine-covered three-story stone structure of of classic design, surmounted by a low metal dome. The librarian's desk is directly inside the doorway, and reading rooms open on either hand. The children's room is on the second floor. The administration office of Morris-Harvey College are on the second and third floors, respectively. The West Virginia Medical Library (open 9-5 Mon.-Fri., 9-12 Sat.), in the basement, has about 1,000 volumes, including current medical literature.

The building was erected ini 1902 as an annex to the old Capitol, which was burned in 1921. In 1925, when offices were moved to the completed unit of the present State House, the annex was purchased by the Charleston Library Committee. It was organized as the Charleston Public Library in 1909. When the State's county-unit school law went into effect in 1933, it became the Kanawha County Public Library, maintained by the county board of education. It has approximately 40,000 volumes and serves the county with two bookmobiles, specially built trucks with bookshelves and checking equipment. The Garnett Library (open same hours), 905 Lewis St., opened in 1927 for Negroes, is a branch of the Kanawha County Public Library. -West Virginia, A Guide to the Mountain State 1941

The library still operates a bookmobile described in the entry, a rarity. The current vehicle was purchased in 2010 and runs Monday - Thursday and makes 26 stops of which seven are schools.
