"Its origins may date back to Roman times, although it is mentioned for the first time in the 11th century writings of Semuel ibn Nagrella, Jewish poet from Badis, third king of the taifa of Granada. This date coincides with the Almohad domination when two rings of walls that are still standing today. These walls prevented the conquest by the monarch of the Castilian crown Pedro I in 1361, being called a "strong city." After this event, the defenses were reinforced and a barbican was built, They rebuilt doors and built a shelter.

The city and its citadel finally fell into Christian hands during the Capture of Antequera that lasted five months in 1410, which was later considered "the greatest Christian triumph between the battle of Salado and the conquest of Granada." The regent Fernando de Trastámara, who governed Castile at that time, pronounced the famous phrase "Let the Sun rise over Antequera and be what God wants"; Since his success he was known as Fernando de Antequera.

In 1429 the Cortes of Aragon were held in the fortress with Alfonso V as monarch.

Its keep has an angular plan and is considered the widest of the Andalusian Muslim towers, with the exception of the Calahorra in Gibraltar. The Antequera tower is crowned with a temple-bell tower built in 1582 to house the city's bell and clock. From the moment of its construction it has been known as the Papabellotas Clock, because the city had to sell its own cork oak forest to cover the costs incurred.

The White Tower, joined to the previous one by a wall of walls reinforced by two buttresses, surprises with the perfect execution of its ashlar masonry. It has two floors above the height of the walkway and its different rooms are covered with different types of brick vault. The interior is illuminated with embrasures and horseshoe arch windows. It is located within what we call the medina ring, built in the 14th century to shelter Muslims expelled by the Castilian conquest. Of the rest of the walled fence, the gate and the Estrella albarrana tower are still preserved, along with the sections of walls recovered from the Plaza del Carmen, and the so-called Water Gate, which is actually a gate next to another albarrana tower.
