This untitled (and undated) painting has gone by several names over the centuries. From the time it was executed around 1665, it has been known as ‘Girl with a Turban,’ ‘Portrait in Antique Costume,’ ‘Head of a Young Girl’ or simply ‘The Pearl.’ It wasn’t until the end of the twentieth century that it became commonly known as ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring.’

Johannes Vermeer, now considered to be one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age, right up there with Rembrandt, died in relative obscurity. It wasn’t until the nineteenth century that he began to rise in prominence. Today he is called the master of light for the effects that he managed to achieve in his paintings.

‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ has been part of the Mauritshuis collection since 1902 and it is currently the marquee painting at that museum. As the most famous painting by one of the most famous Dutch artists, it appears as the default vignette on this 2014 postage stamp. But this stamp could be personalized, i.e., for an additional fee, you could substitute your own portrait for the girl, with or without a pearl earring.
