Little Gull Island Light was built in 1806 by Abisha Woodward on a natural island in Long Island Sound in a section called The Race because if its dangerous rip tides. The round 81' tall lighthouse tower is built of granite blocks on a above a circular granite foundation. Originally the light was lit by whale oil. After switching to lard oil and then kerosene the lighthouse was electrified in 1937. Later it was installed with a second order Fresnel lens with a range of 18 nautical miles that flashed white every 15 seconds. Little Gull Island Light was automated in 1978 and the Fresnel lens was removed.
In 2009 Little Gull Island Light was sold under the provisions of the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act. This traditionally built lighthouse was sold for $381,000, a record amount for the Preservation Act at the time.
