The original pseudo-secession building of the National House (Národní dum, former name for Town Theater - Mestské divadlo) is dated back to 1901 and was and still is of great importance for Zdar's social and cultural life. It was built between 1900 and 1901 according to the design of the Zdar builder Josef Krelina. The building was built at the city's expense with a large contribution from the then mayor František Bink and became the largest social hall in the wider area. In the new cultural center, not only theater was performed, but also association and political meetings, concerts and dance entertainments were held here. The layout of the interior also corresponded to this, with a large hall illuminated by large windows, occupying almost the entire available space of the building.
After the Sokol's house was built in 1930, the National House (Národní dum) became exclusively a theater stand, where, in addition to traditional performances, appeared dramatic plays, operettas and even operas. In the communist construction atmosphere of the late 1970s, the National House began to appear to city officials as too outdated a building. According to contemporary statements, the building was essentially worthless and, moreover, without any historical protection. The interior of the National House was partially modified, the entrance hall was modernized in 1959 and the stage was reconstructed in 1960-61, but in the end the proposal for a total reconstruction won. It was decided that the core of the existing building would be kept and additional premises would be added to it. The original National House (association and cultural house) was to become a real theater meeting the necessary parameters, suitable for more demanding performances by professional theater groups.
Architects from the Architectural Design Studio in Jihlava participated in the shape of the newly rebuilt building, including E. Drápal, M. Roštínský, P. Skála and J. Pospíšil. The interior modifications of the theater were carried out according to the design of the architect Lubor Lacina. The building permit was finally granted only in 1976, and approval of the building together with the surrounding park improvements took place in 1981. The main investor was the town of Ždár nad Sázavou and the first operator was the United Workers' Club of the Ždas national enterprise.
The last significant intervention in the appearance of the building was the overall insulation of the existing building and the design of new facades, which was implemented in 2011 based on the project of Ing.arch. Víta Vencoura (ATELIER WIK s.r.o.)
The theater is located in the center of Doležal Square on land sloping to the southwest. The main entrance to the building is oriented to the north, from where you can reach the theater from the main square of Zdar - Námestí Republiky. An important element on the front entrance facade of the building is a relief with the symbolism of the performing arts, which was installed in 1986 (by František Kovarík). The building is located on a sloping plot, and its rear, south-western facade is thus one floor higher.
