"A los pies de las ruinas del antiguo castillo medieval, llamado Peñón del Moro, emergiendo entre modestas casas del barrio de La Villa, se levanta la parroquia mayor de Nuestra Señora del Soterraño, un vistoso templo gótico-mudéjar construido a partir de 1530 con la intervención de Hernán Ruíz I; consta de tres largas naves separadas por arcos apuntados que se apoyan en pilares cruciformes; la central, con artesonado mudéjar, da paso, tras el arco toral a una capilla mayor cubierta con una bóveda gótica de crucería, que acoge un retablo labrado por Félix Pérez de Mena en el primer tercio del XVIII.
A partir del siglo XVI se le añadieron a esta iglesia sucesivas capillas; las más interesantes son la del Sagrario, en el lado del evangelio, que data de 1639 y ostenta una rica decoración de yeserías polícromas, obra de Francisco Donaire, y la de Jesús Nazareno, en el lado de la epístola, de mediados del XVIII, en la que llama la atención su camarín de disposición octogonal, decorado con espléndidas yeserías, que acoge un Nazareno de principios del XVIII, de rasgos granadinos.
En su tesoro guarda el templo una artística custodia procesional en forma de templete realizada por Manuel de Aguilar".
