The Stoney Trail freeway crossing over the Bow River in northwest Calgary was constructed in 1998 with two bridges. A 4-lane highway bridge ran 24+ meters above the river. About 20 meters below, a cable-stayed pedestrian and bicycle bridge is suspended from the piers that support the original highway bridge. This bridge connects Bowness Park on the north side of the river with Baker Park on the south side, and provides a vital link in the city-wide network of pathways.
In the 2019 photos of the pedestrian bridge, you can see the very early stages of construction of a third bridge next to it. The new bridge, the twin to the highway bridge, opened to traffic in September 2023.
These bridges should not be confused with the new (2022) Stoney Trail bridge crossing the Bow River in southeast Calgary.
