From 1846 to 1848, the United States and Mexico fought over control of roughly half of present-day Texas and New Mexico, as well as other territories. While the first hostilities occurred in the Thornton Affair skirmish on April 25, 1846, the first major battle was fought at Palo Alto on May 8.

This timeline depicts the events that occurred during the Matamoros Campaign of the war. It shows the events of the days before and after the Battle of Palo Alto, culminating with the US occupation of Matamoros 10 days after the battle.

The timeline is on a display inside the Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park Visitor Center, just inside the main entrance. There is no fee to visit the park or Visitor Center, and it's open daily from 9 am to 4:30 pm.
Admission fee? (Include URL/link in Long Description to website that gives the current fee): no
