"Las cisternas romanas de Monturque (provincia de Córdoba, España) son un yacimiento romano descubierto en la ciudad de Monturque en 1885 mientras se ampliaba el cementerio. Compuestas por doce depósitos de agua con una capacidad de 850.000 litros y 300 metros cuadrados, se trata de las cisternas romanas más grandes de España1? y las cuartas del mundo. Fueron declaradas Bien de Interés Cultural el 29 de junio de 1996.
El lugar donde se encuentran las cisternas romanas formaba parte del antiguo foro romano de la ciudad de Monturque en el siglo I después de Cristo, por lo que servía para almacenamiento de agua de lluvia. El agua caía desde los tejados de las viviendas hasta una gran fuente central que se filtraba hasta las cisternas subterráneas. Un sistema de filtros hacía que los sedimentos quedaran en el fondo y se sacara con un sistema de poleas el agua requerida. Eran limpiadas una vez al año y su función principal era abastecer a las termas romanas cercanas, por lo que albergaban una capacidad de hasta 850.000 litros. Las cisternas no fueron las únicas del municipio, se han hallado otras ocho cisternas, más pequeñas, pero con el mismo sistema, que pertenecían a familias nobles con alto poder adquisitivo".

"The Roman cisterns of Monturque (province of Córdoba, Spain) are a Roman site discovered in the city of Monturque in 1885 while the cemetery was being expanded. Composed of twelve water tanks with a capacity of 850,000 liters and 300 square meters, they are of the largest Roman cisterns in Spain1? and the fourth in the world. They were declared a Site of Cultural Interest on June 29, 1996.
The place where the Roman cisterns are located was part of the ancient Roman forum of the city of Monturque in the 1st century after Christ, so it was used to store rainwater. The water fell from the roofs of the houses to a large central fountain that filtered into the underground cisterns. A system of filters kept the sediments at the bottom and the required water was removed with a pulley system. They were cleaned once a year and their main function was to supply the nearby Roman baths, so they held a capacity of up to 850,000 liters. The cisterns were not the only ones in the municipality, eight other cisterns have been found, smaller, but with the same system, which belonged to noble families with high purchasing power."
