Having been founded in 301 AD, the twentieth century represented the sixteenth century of San Marino’s existence as an independent republic. In recognition of this, the city of Rome presented a column from the ancient Roman Forum to the tiny republic. The Sammarinese made a monument out of it and placed it in a traffic circle a little southeast of the city’s center. Along with the column, perched atop a pedestal, there are some bas-reliefs along the wall behind it. The monument was unveiled on June 13, 1937.

Postage stamps featuring this monument were part of an extended set intended to be issued in 1942 celebrating 20 years of Fascism in Italy. But as that government began to unravel, the stamps were withheld from sale. The next year, after the resignation of Benito Mussolini, the stamps were overprinted and released, this time celebrating the collapse of fascism. Officially, only the overprinted stamps were made available, however, many un-overprinted examples have made their way into the marketplace.
