Originally built in support of a whiskey distillery in Warren, RI, this ‘smock’ type windmill has been disassembled and moved on multiple occasions during its active service life. It was first moved to Fall River, MA and then to two different locations in Portsmouth, RI. Finally, in 1969, the old mill continued its slow march south toward the sea when it was moved to Prescott Farm in Middletown by the Newport Restoration Foundation who maintain the historical site.
Windmills of this type were once a common sight on Aquidneck Island. This particular mill is a little unusual in that it has two sets of grinding stones, effectively doubling its cornmeal output. Besides the windmill, Prescott Farm has a few other historic buildings that have been relocated from other sites, an herb garden and several trails and picnic areas. The windmill is named for Robert Sherman who first brought it to Portsmouth.
