In de overkapping bij de ingang van de kosterij hangt een bel. Vermoedelijk is de bel een verwijzing naar het oude schooltje dat hier vroeger was gevestigd.
Op het informatie bord voor de kerk wordt ook genoemd dat in de kosterij vroeger het schooltje zat en dat de koster vaak ook schoolmeester, klokkenluider en doodgraver was.
Het oude kosterijhuis werd in 1508 gebouwd in qua leeftijd verschillende soorten steen.
School
Al in 1653 kreeg hier de Ressense jeugd les van schoolmeester Folrijck Reijns die behalve schoolmeester ook koster, doodgraver, klokkeluider en voorzanger was. Dat was toen nog in het oude schoolhuis. De pastorie bevond zich in Huize Stadwijk, ten noorden van de kerk. In 1866, na de scheiding van de kerkelijke gemeenten Ressen en Bemmel, is het oude schoolhuis gesloopt en vervangen door het huidige pastoriehuis. Ook hier was in het achterhuis een school ondergebracht.
Tiendenrecht
Het tiendenrecht was een vorm van winstbelasting. Je kreeg dit recht bijvoorbeeld als je jouw grond verpachte. De pachter kreeg dan de plicht om voor het gebruik van de grond één tiende deel af te staan aan de eigenaar van de grond. Tot 1750 had de koster in Ressen het tiendenrecht van de kerkelijke goederen. Dat gold ook voor de oogst op de door de kerk verpachte landerijen: op elke tiende geoogste korenschoof werd een elzetak geplaatst als markering van dat tiende deel.

There is a bell in the canopy at the entrance to the hall. The bell is probably a reference to the old school that used to be located here.
The information board in front of the church also mentions that the sexton used to house a school and that the sexton was often also a schoolmaster, bell ringer and grave digger.

School
As early as 1653, Ressen's youth were taught here by schoolmaster Folrijck Reijns, who, in addition to being a schoolmaster, was also a sexton, gravedigger, bell ringer and cantor. That was still in the old school house. The parsonage was located in Huize Stadwijk, north of the church. In 1866, after the separation of the religious communities of Ressen and Bemmel, the old school house was demolished and replaced by the current parsonage house. Here too, a school was housed in the back of the house.
Tithing right
The tithe law was a form of profit tax. For example, you were given this right if you rented out your land. The tenant was then obliged to hand over one-tenth of the land to the owner of the land for the use of the land. Until 1750, the sexton in Ressen had the right to tithe the church property. This also applied to the harvest on the lands leased by the church: an alder branch was placed on every tenth sheaf of wheat harvested to mark that tenth part.
