"Philanthropist and San Francisco Recreation & Parks Department Commissioner, Herbert Fleishhacker, encouraged the Parks Commission to purchase 30 acres of land at the southwest corner of San Francisco to build a recreation center for the people of San Francisco. His vision was to build a saltwater pool so that the ocean could be enjoyed by families in a safe way. At the time it was built, the Fleishhacker Pool was the largest heated saltwater pool in the world. The arches before you are all that remains of the Poolhouse that stood next to the Pool."
