This marker is one of several on a road side pull out on the north side of Highway 64, just east of Clayton. Most of these commemorate (or at lesat mention) the Santa Fe Trail, which ran from Franklin, Missouri to Santa Fe, New Mexico, and passed through what is now Clayton. This location has been designated as the Santa Fe Trail National Scenic Byway.
