The 422-seat Long Theatre was the first in Keyes, opening on May 31, 1947. At the time, the town had a population of 227. Lewis W. "Bill" Long was the owner of the house. The theater was operated by the family; it was said that if you put your feet up on a seat Bill's wife would smack you. Children who were tasked with cleaning the theater were told that they could keep any change that they found while cleaning, and Bill would intentionally plant money there for them. The theater had a "cry room" where mothers could take fussy babies but still see the movie. The Long Theatre was in operation until Bill's death in 1973. The building was sold to Raymond Smalts, who then gave it to the city, which in turn sold it to Blake Wells. Wells plans to restore the theater to its former Art Deco glory; he has alreaedy done considerable clean up and at the last report was conducting some structural assessments. The red-brick building still sports the original "Long Theatre" neon sign.
