German merchants, mainly from Bavaria and Austria, maintained a presence in Venice for over 500 years: from the early thirteenth century to the fall of Republic of Venice at the end of the eighteenth century. They represented a powerful mercantile colony which managed imported goods from the Orient to areas across the Alps to the north. The Fondaco dei Tedeschi was their warehouse, business offices and living quarters throughout that time.
The original 1228 building that occupied this location is long gone having been destroyed by fire in the early sixteenth century. The current building dates from around 1505-08 and is typical of the Italian Renaissance style. The bottom floor, which was accessible from the canal, contained the warehouses while the upper floors housed the business offices and living quarters.
In the twentieth century, the building served as headquarters for the Venetian branch of Poste Italiane, which explains its presence on the postage stamp, Italy’s 1990 edition of the Europa series. Today, the building has been completely renovated and contains an upscale shopping center owned by the DFS group.
