This diminutive locomotive, with an unusual wheel arrangement (for America at least) was originally purchased by the city of St. Louis to move stuff between their two waterworks facilities: one at Bissell’s Pt. and the other at Chain of Rocks (a distance of about 7 miles along the Mississippi River). After nearly 25 years of service, it was sold to Birmingham Rail & Locomotive Inc. who rebuilt it and sold it to the Alabama Asphaltic Limestone Co. After only five years, it was returned to BR & L who this time sold it to the DeBardeleben Coal Corp.
DeBardeleben only kept this locomotive for about two years before selling it to the T. R. Miller Mill in Brewton, AL, who gave it the number 12. For the next 20 years, it moved forest products between T. R. Miller’s two main facilities: one that produced building lumber and the other that produced telephone poles. T. R. Miller then sold it to W. T. Smith, another lumber company, who managed to eke another 10+ years of service out of the old engine. In 1967, the little engine was finally retired and placed on display in Pensacola, FL, repainted as T. R. Miller #12.
