Esta escultura de Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, el Cid Campeador, a lomos de su caballo Babieca está realizada en bronce.
Babieca, según "El Cantar del Mio Cid" era un caballo norteafricano, obediente y ágil, perfecto para la guerra.
Normalmente en las esculturas del Cid, siempre lo han inmortalizado con su espada "la tizona", pero en esta escultura ha sido con una lanza.
Otro de los detalles intersantes de esta escultura es en la propia figura de el Cid, lo han caracterizado sin su típico casco, lo cual nos da a pensar que el artista escultor ha querido representar una escena de batalla vencida, con la espada guardada en su funda y enarbolando una bandera de vencedor en una lanza.
"En un espacio ajardinado se encuentra, en el comienzo de la Gran Vía de Ramón y Cajal, junto a la llamada plaza de España, enfrente de la antigua «ermita» de la Roqueta, hoy templo parroquial, apenas alejado del repuesto monumento a San Vicente Mártir, este otro del Cid Campeador, obra de la escultora norteamericana Anna Hyatt Hungtinton, viuda del gran hispanista Archer Milton Hungtinton, habiendo aquella artista, participe del amor a España de su esposo, regalado, además, la costosa fundición de la estatua ecuestre, pro valor de alrededor de tres millones de pesetas. La obra es versión exacta, fundida por el escultor Juan de Avalos, de la existente ante la Hispanic Society de Nueva York fundación de Mister Hungtinton, el traductor del Poema del Cid, amigo de Sorolla, al que encargó la serie inmortal de las regiones españolas y creador de un Museo maravilloso en las inmediaciones del turbulento Harlem neoyorquino del que es contrapunto admirable. Llegó la estatua a Valencia el 3 de marzo de 1964. Con ello se ponía fin a una serie de intentos, que, como en los casos de Sorolla, Serrano y Llorente, resultaban vanos o muy tardios, pues ya en 1888 se formularon en pro de un recuerdo monumental de Valencia, al caudillo castellano que la hizo -con el aragonés San Vicente mártir- famosa en el mundo, proliferando los recuerdos al Cid en la literatura."
