The land for this Council building was allocated in 1883. From a regional competition the Clark brothers won with their design in 1884. Being constructed under supervision of Hugo Du Rietz. Beside the Nash memorial is a historical marker with the following information:

"The Gympie Town Hall was opened in 1890 on land that had been reserved for that purpose in 1883. The design was done by the Clark Brothers who had won a competition for the design of the Brisbane and Gympie Town Halls in 1884. Its construction was overseen by local architect Hugo Du Rietz. Due to financial issues at the time only a portion of the original design was constructed by the builder Joseph Jew. This consisted of the left wing and tower.

"Gympie was declared a city in 1905 following continued growth, and as the gold production declined in 1927, the agricultural industry became highly productive bringing further wealth to the city. By the mid- to late- 1930's the Gympie City Council was considering the completion of its town hall. Using the design of the Clark Brothers, C H Griffin in 1938 , designed the extension to include a new post office on the ground floor, a new staircase and vestibules, offices and reception hall. The extensions were opened by State Treasurer, Mr F A Cooper on 21 October 1939.

"In later years other alterations were made to keep up with the growth of society. In 2009 Gympie Regional Council recommended that Council meetings be held in the Gympie Town Hall after many years of meeting at the former Queensland National Bank building. The town hall continues to accommodate Council staff with offices."
