The Race Rock Light Station was built between 1871 and 1878 to protect ships from a dangerous reef SW of Fisher Island. It took seven years to construct the granite riprap foundation and one year to build the 2 story high granite lightkeepers house and granite light tower. The lighthouse was designed by Francis Hopkins Smith in the Gothic Revival style and activated on January 1, 1879.
The light tower has a square base and octagonal railing and lantern room on top. It is 45' high above the man-made island and 67' high above sea level. It is equipped with a a fourth-order, revolving Fresnel lens that flashes red every 10 seconds. Its light is visible for 14 nautical miles. The lighthouse was automated in 1978.
