Las causas de la fundación de la Orden de Santa María de Montesa, hay que hacer referencia a la Orden Militar del Temple.
La Orden del Temple de Salomón fue fundada en Jerusalen en el año 1118 por el Caballero Hugo de PAyens, para la defensa de los santos lugares y de los peregrinos que acudian a Tierra Santa.
Consolidada y apoyada por los Papas, su poder se extiende por Europa y más concretamente en España para intervenir en las guerras de Reconquista con carácter de Cruzada. Gracias a los logros conseguidos fueron compensados con numerosos castillos por toda la geografía Española.
A pesar de haber prestado grandes servicios a la Cristiandad, en el año 1307 el Rey de Francia Felipe IV acusa ante el Papa Clemente V de cometer graves crímenes y herejias, fueros desautorizados, juzgados, torturados y muchos perecieron en la hoguera.
En España, el Rey Jaime II de Aragón hizo caso omiso de tales acusaciones, pero ante la insistencia del Papa y del Rey de Francia, y muy a su pesar, acabó acatando las órdenes del Papa y mandó prenderlos, pero estos opusieron resistencia y se hicieron fuertes en el Castillo de Monzón donde al final fueron vencidos y trasladados a Salamanca para ser juzgados.
Así fue como en 1312 se dio por desaparecida la orden del Temple., pero el Rey Jaime II de Aragón quería una orden militar como las de Santiago, Calatrava y Alcántara y así evitar el desmesurado crecimiento de la Orden del Hospital, pero el Papa Clemente V desautorizó su formación. Pero en el año 1316, muerto el Papa Clemente V, su sucesor Juan XXII, accede a las pretensiones del Monarca español el 10 de Junio de 1317 creandose la Orden Militar de Santa MAría de Montesa.
Desde su fundación adoptaron como emblema una cruz negra flordelisada colocada sobre el manto blanco en el lado izquierdo a la altura del pecho.
