[DE] "Der Große Montiggler See (italienisch Lago Grande di Monticolo) befindet sich im Überetsch in Südtirol (Italien).
Der See liegt auf 492 m Höhe im Montiggler Wald auf dem Mitterberg, etwas nordöstlich von Montiggl, einer Fraktion der Gemeinde Eppan. Erreichbar ist er über mehrere Wanderwege aus verschiedenen Richtungen und mit dem Auto von St. Michael, dem Hauptort von Eppan, her. Wenige Hundert Meter nordöstlich befindet sich der zur Gänze von Wald umschlossene Kleine Montiggler See.
Der Große Montiggler See ist etwa 17,8 ha groß, seine Uferlinie ist 2,02 km lang. Mit einer mittleren Tiefe von 8,4 m (maximal: 11,5 m) fasst er ein Volumen von fast 1,5 Millionen m³. Das Einzugsgebiet des Sees ist ca. 2,3 km² groß. An seinem Nordostende ist der Uferverlauf teilweise felsig, am Südwestende geht das Gewässer in einen Sumpf über.
Entwässert wird der See über den Angelbach.
Der Große Montiggler See wird als meso- bis eutroph eingestuft. Der große Nährstoffgehalt ergibt sich aus drei Faktoren: einer hohen natürlichen Belastung (etwa Laub, Staub), dem sehr geringen Wasseraustausch und der starken menschlichen Nutzung. Als Schutzmaßnahme wird seit 1980 periodisch Tiefenwasser abgepumpt. In den Wintermonaten kommt es außerdem zu einem Schilfschnitt, der Verlandungstendenzen bremsen soll.
Analysen der Wasserqualität in Hinblick auf eine Eignung als Badesee erbrachten sehr gute Ergebnisse.
Das Gebiet der Montiggler Seen dient als stark besuchtes Naherholungsgebiet. An der Westseite des Großen Sees gibt es touristische Infrastrukturen mit einem Badesteg, Restaurant, Hotel und Freibad.
Von Gottfried Seelos wurde 1853 eine lavierte Zeichnung mit der Bezeichnung Montikleersee in Südtirol auf einer Ausstellung des Österreichischen Kunstvereins in Wien gezeigt.
Der Südtiroler Maler und Grafiker Max Sparer verbrachte seine letzten Lebensjahre im sogenannten Schlössl, einem historistischen, burgähnlichen Gebäude am Südwestende des Sees, das 1888 im Auftrag von Josef von Zastrow (Josef Heinrich von Zastrow-Sängerhoff), dem Besitzer von Ansitz Aichberg, errichtet wurde."

[EN] "Großer Montiggler See" (Italian: Lago Grande di Monticolo) is located in the Überetsch region of South Tyrol (Italy).
The lake is located at an altitude of 492 m in the Montiggl forest on the Mitterberg, slightly northeast of Montiggl, a fraction of the municipality of Eppan. It can be reached by several hiking trails from different directions and by car from St. Michael, the main village of Appiano. A few hundred meters to the northeast is the Small Montiggl Lake, which is completely surrounded by woods.
The Great Montiggl Lake is about 17.8 hectares, its shoreline is 2.02 km long. With an average depth of 8.4 m (maximum: 11.5 m) it holds a volume of almost 1.5 million m³. The catchment area of the lake is about 2.3 km². At its northeast end the shore is partly rocky, at the southwest end the water body turns into a swamp.
The lake is drained by the Angelbach stream.
The Great Montiggler Lake is classified as meso- to eutrophic. The high nutrient content results from three factors: a high natural load (e.g. leaves, dust), the very low water exchange and the heavy human use. As a protective measure, deep water has been pumped out periodically since 1980. In addition, reeds are cut during the winter months to slow down siltation tendencies.
Analyses of the water quality with regard to suitability as a bathing lake yielded very good results.
The area of the Montiggler Lakes serves as a highly frequented recreational area. On the west side of the Great Lake there are tourist infrastructures with a bathing jetty, restaurant, hotel and open-air swimming pool.
A wash drawing by Gottfried Seelos entitled Montikleersee in South Tyrol was shown at an exhibition of the Österreichischer Kunstverein in Vienna in 1853.
The South Tyrolean painter and graphic artist Max Sparer spent the last years of his life in the so-called Schlössl, a historicist, castle-like building at the southwest end of the lake, built in 1888 by order of Josef von Zastrow (Josef Heinrich von Zastrow-Sängerhoff), the owner of Ansitz Aichberg."
