Like its smaller cousin, the Palazzetto dello Sport, the Palazzo dello Sport was built specifically for the 1960 Olympic games. Also, like the Palazzetto dello Sport, it was host to some of the basketball competition, including all of the medal rounds. It saw the USA win the gold and the Soviet Union take the Silver. (Italy placed fourth - just out of the medals.) It was also the main venue for the boxing competition hosting all rounds in all divisions. Host nation Italy fared better in boxing, winning three gold medals and seven overall. The USA also won three gold medals including one by a young Mohammed Ali (then known as Cassius Clay) in the light heavyweight division.
Since the Olympic games, the Palazzo dello Sport, which seats about 12,000, has been home to the Italian basketball team Virtus Roma for most of its life, as well as host venue for various boxing and volleyball tournaments. It has also been used for music concerts and various political conventions.
The stamp was issued in 1960, part of a set celebrating the Olympic games. The Palazzo dello Sport is located in the EUR section of Rome and has undergone several major renovations in recent years.
