In TU-ENDIE-WEI PARK (Ind., the point between two waters), an 84 foot granite shaft, erected in 1909, m arks the Site of the Battle of Point Pleasant (se above). Inscribed on its sides are the names of those killed and wounded in the affray; at the foot of the shaft stands the marble figure of a frontiersman, rifle in hand. South of the monument is the Grave of 'Mad Ann' Bailey (se Charleston), intrepid woman soldier and border scout.

In the park, on the river bank, is the MANSION HOUSE(open), a log structure erected in 1797 by Walter Newman. The oldest house in the Kanawha Vally, it served as tavern, dance hall, church, and community center. It has ben restored as a museum and contains authentic Colonial furniture and collections of early Americana. The CELERON MUNUMENT, a headstone of the terrace between the Mansion House and the river bank, commemorates the finding in 1849 of a lead plate buried in 1749 at the mouth of the Kanawha by Captain Peter Joseph Celeron, who thus claimed th Ohio River and its tributaries and all lands drained by them for Louis XV, King of France. Celeron buried our of the plates along the Ohio, but only two have been discovered.-West Virginia: A Guide to the Mountain State 1941
