Está dedicada a San Alfonso María de Ligorio, el fundador de la Congregación del Santísimo Redentor (Redentoristas), quien construyó y dotó de personal a la iglesia.

La iglesia es uno de los raros ejemplos de arquitectura neogótica en Roma. Es una de las últimas iglesias papales de Roma, aunque los Redentoristas tienen posesión de la iglesia y su complejo relacionado.La iglesia fue construida entre 1855 y 1859 según un diseño del arquitecto escocés George Wigley.? Es uno de los raros ejemplos de estilo neogótico en Roma. Mariano Armellini da una opinión negativa: "La arquitectura de la iglesia es más bien ostrogoda que gótica". Es una de las últimas iglesias de la Roma papal, y aunque está consagrada al Santísimo Redentor, es conocida como la iglesia de San Alfonso fundador de los Redentoristas, a la que pertenece junto con todo el conjunto anexo.

La fachada, de ladrillo y travertino, a la que se accede tras una amplia escalera, presenta un pórtico, al que se abren tres puertas; en el tímpano de la puerta central hay un mosaico policromado que representa a la Virgen del Perpetuo Socorro entre los ángeles, y en la cúspide del tímpano la estatua del Redentor en mármol de Carrara. La fachada se embellece aún más con un rosetón.

It is dedicated to San Alfonso María de Ligorio, the founder of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists), who built and staffed the church.

The church is one of the rare examples of neo-Gothic architecture in Rome. It is one of the last Papal churches in Rome, although the Redemptorists have possession of the church and its related complex. The church was built between 1855 and 1859 to a design by Scottish architect George Wigley. It is one of the rare examples of the Gothic Revival style. in Rome. Mariano Armellini gives a negative opinion: "The architecture of the church is more Ostrogothic than Gothic." It is one of the last churches of papal Rome, and although it is consecrated to the Most Holy Redeemer, it is known as the church of San Alfonso, founder of the Redemptorists, to which it belongs together with the entire annex.

The façade, made of brick and travertine, which is accessed after a wide staircase, presents a portico, to which three doors open; In the tympanum of the central door there is a polychrome mosaic that represents the Virgin of Perpetual Help among the angels, and on the top of the tympanum the statue of the Redeemer in Carrara marble. The façade is further embellished with a rose window.
