One of 2 family burial grounds for the descendants of Samuel Gardner. The other is the adjacent North Gardner Cemetery. The South Gardner Cemetery was established in 1696 and is located on Old Gardner's Neck Road (behind the Fire Station).
The oldest burial is for Samuel Gardner in 1696. The last burial was ~1896. The cemetery has been photographed but several unmarked graves remain. Names important to the history of the town, besides Gardner, are Brown, Jones and Shearman. There are several markers for sea captains in the cemetery, too.
The Gardner Family was one of the oldest, prominent families in town and owned most of the land in this part of the town - thus the name Gardners Neck.
