Colossal bronze sculpture of Daedalus made in 2016 by Polish sculptor Igor Mitoraj and located in front of the Temple of Venus near Porta Marina.

In Greek mythology, Daedalus, son of Eupalamus and Alcippe, was a highly skilled architect and craftsman, famous for having built the labyrinth of Crete. Daedalus had two sons: Icarus and Iapyge.

Daedalus was so proud of his achievements that he could not bear the thought of having a rival. His sister had left her son Pérdix (sometimes called Talo or Calo) in his care to learn the mechanical arts. The boy was a capable student and showed surprising displays of ingenuity. Walking along the beach he found a fish bone. Imitating her, he took a piece of iron and cut it on the edge, thus inventing the saw. He joined two pieces of iron at one end with a rivet and sharpened the opposite ends, thus making a compass. Daedalus was so envious of his nephew's achievements that when they were together one day atop the temple of Athena on the Acropolis in Athens, he took the opportunity and pushed him. But the goddess, who favors ingenuity, saw him fall and changed his destiny, transforming him into a bird baptized with her name, the partridge. This bird does not make its nest in trees or fly high, but rather nests in hedges and avoids high places, aware of its fall. For this crime Daedalus was tried and exiled.
