C. y principios del siglo i a.

In the exedra of the House of the Faun, the mosaic of Issos was discovered, which represents the Battle of Issos in 333 BC. C. between Alexander the Great and Darius III of Persia. This mosaic was probably commissioned by some ancestor of the owner, who would have been related to the king of Macedonia. It could have been inspired by or copied from a Greek painting completed in the late 4th century BC. C. probably by the artist Philoxenus of Eretria.

Contrary to most Pompeian pavements from the end of the 2nd century B.C. C. and the beginning of the 1st century BC. C. this mosaic was made with the technique called opus vermiculatum, which literally means "like the work of the worm". and not with the more common opus signinum or other type of stone flakes fixed with mortar. Small pieces of less than 4 millimeters of stone and colored glass, called tesserae, were placed in rows on the ground like worms. The mosaic of Alexander the Great measures 5.50 by 3.20 meters, and approximately one and a half million tesserae were used to make it.
