La Casa del Fauno, construida durante el siglo ii a. C., fue una de las residencias romanas de mayor tamaño y más impresionantes de Pompeya, en Italia. Sepultada durante la erupción del Vesubio en 79, albergó muchas obras de arte en su interior y es una de las domus aristocráticas más lujosas de la República romana. La vivienda refleja este periodo de manera más fiel que otros restos arqueológicos encontrados, incluso en la propia Roma. Debe su nombre a una estatua de bronce que representa a un fauno, encontrada en uno de sus atrios. Ocupa casi por completo la Insula 12 de la Regio VI de la ciudad.

Numerosas evidencias indican que la casa fue reparada o reconstruida de nuevo tras el gran terremoto del año 62, siendo las reformas realizadas en los muros orientales del atrio tetrástilo las más importantes. El edificio fue utilizado como vivienda desde el siglo ii a. C. hasta el año 79, cuando finalmente quedó en estado de ruina debido a la erupción del monte Vesubio. Aunque el seísmo fue devastador, las capas de ceniza volcánica que cubrieron la ciudad abandonada preservaron los mosaicos y frescos, que de otra forma se habrían destruido o deteriorado por el paso del tiempo.

El acceso principal a la vivienda, flanqueado por pilastras de toba volcánica,? se decora con la inscripción latina “HAVE” en el pavimento, un saludo tanto de bienvenida como de despedida. Realizado con teselas de colores, pretendía exhibir la cultura del propietario, conocedor de la lengua latina en un periodo en que todavía se hablaba la lengua osca. El vestíbulo está pavimentado en opus sectile, con triángulos en mármol y piedra calcárea, y en su interior había un pequeño templete o lararium realizado con columnas corintias.

The House of the Faun, built during the 2nd century BC. C., it was one of the largest and most impressive Roman residences in Pompeii, in Italy. Buried during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79, it housed many works of art inside and is one of the most luxurious aristocratic domus of the Roman Republic. The house reflects this period more faithfully than other archaeological remains found, even in Rome itself. It owes its name to a bronze statue that represents a faun, found in one of its atriums. It occupies almost completely the Insula 12 of the Regio VI of the city.

Numerous evidences indicate that the house was repaired or rebuilt after the great earthquake of the year 62, the most important being the reforms carried out on the eastern walls of the tetrastyle atrium. The building was used as a home from the 2nd century BC. C. until the year 79, when it was finally in a state of ruin due to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Although the earthquake was devastating, the layers of volcanic ash that covered the abandoned city preserved the mosaics and frescoes, which otherwise would have been destroyed or deteriorated by the passage of time.

The main access to the house, flanked by volcanic tuff pilasters, is decorated with the Latin inscription "HAVE" on the pavement, a greeting of both welcome and farewell. Made with colored tesserae, it was intended to display the culture of the owner, who knew the Latin language in a period when the Oscan language was still spoken. The vestibule is paved in opus sectile, with marble and limestone triangles, and inside there was a small pavilion or lararium made with Corinthian columns.
