Coat of arms of Henry Gold on a slab in the tower of St Benedict's church, Glastonbury. This fine ledger slab is probably of Blue Lias, dedicated to Henry Gold, c.1711, with a circular incised armorial with Baroque mantling.

The family of Gold of Sharpham Park near Glastonbury has a pew in St Benedict's Church.
The inscription on the legewr stone reads -
En depositas lector sub hoc
marmore reliquias integerrimi
viri Henrici Gold de villa
Sharphamiensi equitis aurati
Banci Reginensis Justiciarii
prudentissimi cujus anima
corporis domicilio soluta ad
Deum Creatorem remigravit
Martii die xxvi
anno Annæ Reginæ ix
ætatis suæ lxvii
redemptionis nostræ MDCCX

Which translates as:
Here deposited, Reader, under this marble are the remains of the
distinguished man Henry Gold (Gould) of Sharpham House,
Knight Bachelor, most wise judge of the Queen’s Bench, whose
soul, released from its bodily domicile, flew to his Creator God
on the 26th day of March in the ninth year of Queen Anne
at the age of 67 in the year of Our Lord 1710.

Sir Henry is given the title ‘eques auratus’, or Knight Bachelor, because he was allowed to gild his armour — a privilege confined to knights. A Knight Bachelor was knighted by the monarch but not included as a member of one of the organised orders of Chivalry, which were of higher rank. There is of course an inevitable play on words here.

This Sir Henry (the first of two) was the grandfather of Henry Fielding (b 1707), author of the then infamous novel, ‘Tom Jones’.

It is most likely that Fielding, who was born at Sharpham, was baptised in St Benedict’s, like his sister. Sharpham Manor was also the birthplace of the Elizabethan poet Sir Edward Dyer (1543-1607)
