Almost immediately following the end of World War II, a cenotaph honoring the casualties of that war was proposed for Dam Square, the historic center of the city of Amsterdam. While official plans were moving slowly, a temporary monument was erected in 1947 consisting of urns with soil from each of the Dutch provinces affected by the war.
The final design, by Dutch artist John Rädecker and architect Jacobus Oud, was approved in 1952 and took four years to complete. It consists of a large pillar standing 72 ft. high, bristling with allegorical figures representing suffering, loyalty, peace, victory, liberation and new life. Every year on Remembrance Day (May 4), a ceremony is held in Dam Square, attended by Dutch Royalty, with this monument as the centerpiece.
