Emmanuel Methodist Church was founded in 1871 at the corner of First & James Streets to meet the needs of the area's growing Swedish population. A new sanctuary was dedicated in 1907 at the corner of Third & Hamilton -- on the other end of the same block of Hamilton as the First Methodist Church.
The dissolution of the Methodist Church's Swedish Conferences, of which Emmanuel was a member, led to the merger of Emmanuel Methodist with First Methodist 1n 1948. With the merger of the Methodist and Evangelical United Brethren denominations, the church became United Methodist Church of Geneva in 1969.
Both church buildings were used by the church for a number of years, but eventually the Emmanuel Methodist Church building was sold and converted to commercial use, and today houses the Hi-Hat Resale Shop.
