The Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist is located on the corner of East 9th Street and Superior Avenue in downtown Cleveland, Ohio. Construction on the original cathedral building at this location was begun in 1848 and completed in 1852, under the direction of the Most Rev. Amadeus Rappe, the first bishop of the Diocese of Cleveland. In 1943, Bishop Edward Hoban decided to reconstruct the cathedral. Construction was completed between 1946 and 1948 on the enlarged building. The cathedral was consecrated on September 4, 1948. The building underwent further renovations in 1977. The stone building includes one bell tower, which did not have real bells until 1988. The cathedral is open daily for visits, as well as for confession and daily Mass.
