[ENG] The Grote Markt was already mentioned as "Forum Machliniense" in a deed of aldermen of 1286, including the current Schoenmarkt: a dries formed by the Roman road Bavay-Utrecht along Steenweg-Onder den Toren, with a branch along Scheerstraat-Befferstraat. Afterwards an important junction of old roads, namely Brussels-Antwerp-Lier-Diest. In the early 14th century expansion to the east through the demolition of a row of houses between Standonckstraat and Bruul, for the construction of the new Lakenhal. Named "Grote Markt" since 1486.

With the construction in 1526 of the Palace of the Grand Council (northern town hall wing), the former prison "het Steen" located in the outcrop of the Standonckstraat (formerly known as the Steenstraat) also disappeared.

Traditionally and to this day political, economic and commercial center with the town hall, a concentration of markets, important taverns and hotels for passenger transport, later adapted as retail and catering establishments; the largely renovated ground floor divides the old facade walls into two registers.

The square walls are characterized by predominantly 18th-century buildings replacing the earlier wooden facades. Some buildings were restored at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century (including numbers 4, 9, 13 and 17) or rebuilt in neotraditional style (numbers 5, 14, 16, 27 and 31), according to old archive photos from around 1900-1910, often in the site of a former three-storey deep house with plastered cornice from the 18th or 19th century.

In the center of the market square is a white marble statue of Margaret of Austria, erected in 1849 by Jozef Tuerlinckx (1809-1873). Bluestone plinth with biographical inscription and Neo-Renaissance motifs, designed by then city architect F. Bauwens; cast iron gate; around it pattern of former clock face of St Rumbold's Tower, incorporated into the cobbled square. Next to it used to be a beautiful cast-iron kiosk, demolished in the early 20th century.

[NL] Het betreft een plein met nagenoeg vierkante plattegrond, met als blikvanger ten oosten het stadhuis en de voormalige Lakenhal, ten westen de "Beyaert" met op de achtergrond de Sint-Romboutskerk, en ten zuidwesten geopend naar de Schoenmarkt met het voormalig Schepenhuis.

De pleinwanden worden gekarakteriseerd door overwegend 18de-eeuwse bebouwing ter vervanging van de vroegere houten gevels. Enkele panden werden eind 19de, begin 20ste eeuw gerestaureerd (onder meer nummers 4, 9, 13 en 17) of heropgebouwd in neotraditionele stijl (nummers 5, 14, 16, 27 en 31), volgens oude archieffoto's van circa 1900-1910 vaak in de plaats van een vroeger diephuis van drie bouwlagen met bepleisterde lijstgevel uit de 18de of 19de eeuw.

Centraal op het marktplein staat een wit marmeren beeld van Margareta van Oostenrijk, opgericht in 1849 door Jozef Tuerlinckx (1809-1873). Arduinen sokkel met biografisch opschrift en neorenaissancemotieven, ontworpen door toenmalige stadsarchitect F. Bauwens; gietijzeren hek; eromheen patroon van vroegere uurwijzerplaat van de Sint-Romboutstoren, ingewerkt in het gekasseide plein. Ernaast stond voorheen een fraaie gietijzeren kiosk, afgebroken in het begin van de 20ste eeuw.
