While there were settlements near the Göta river (Götaälv) already known around the 17th century, the city of Trollhättan began to grow into a bigger city from the surrounding municipalities in the mid of the 19th century. Officially becoming a city took nearly 20 years from 1896 until January 1st in 1916 with the official founding of "Trollhättan stad".
A railway station for the people of the city was built in the 1930ies and the need to cross the channel and the Göta river, which are to the west of the station, also created the need to cross the road Kungsporten right beside the station. As traffic on the road from the south of Trollhättan to the industrial area in the north was probably already high at that time, the railway decided to build a bridge with a width of 22m, a length of 32m and a height of nearly 5m. It was built in 1934 as the top stone of the bridge indicates.
